Shopify Winter 2026: Everything Australian Merchants Need to Know About the New Features

Shopify drops its Editions updates twice a year, and Winter 2026 is one of the most feature-dense releases in the platform's history. From AI-powered selling in ChatGPT and Copilot, to A/B testing built directly into the admin, to a brand new retail POS hub — this release fundamentally expands what's possible for merchants at every level.

For Australian store owners, the challenge isn't knowing that these features exist — it's knowing which ones to prioritise first and how they translate to real business outcomes. This article breaks down the most important Shopify Winter 2026 updates, explains who each feature is designed for, and outlines how beCommerce can help you get set up quickly so you're not leaving growth on the table.

AI-POWERED SELLING — FROM SIDEKICK TO AGENTIC STOREFRONTS

The biggest story in Winter 2026 is how deeply AI has been woven into every layer of the Shopify experience.

Shopify Agentic Storefronts is now live, allowing your products to surface directly inside AI chats like ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, and Perplexity — without any extra work once set up. This isn't a future roadmap item; it's available now and it represents a genuinely new discovery channel for your store. Customers shopping through AI assistants can find, browse, and click through to purchase your products without ever visiting a search engine.

Sidekick, Shopify's built-in AI assistant, has also received major upgrades. You can now create reusable "Skills" from your most common prompts and share them with your team. Multi-step task completion means Sidekick can now plan and execute complex workflows — setting up a full promotion campaign in a single conversation, for instance. Voice-powered chat is now available on mobile, so you can manage your store on the go without touching a keyboard.

For Australian merchants who've been curious about AI tools but unsure where to start, Sidekick in Winter 2026 is now powerful enough to meaningfully impact your day-to-day operations.

    TESTING, ANALYTICS, AND SMARTER DECISIONS

Two major additions to Shopify's analytics and testing toolkit are going to change how Australian merchants validate decisions before spending money on them.

Rollouts lets you schedule theme changes and run A/B tests directly in the Shopify admin — no third-party app required. You can test different versions of your homepage, product pages, or promotional banners and let real customer data determine the winner. For Australian stores investing in conversion rate optimisation, this is a significant addition that previously required expensive external tools or developer support.

SimGym goes even further: it's an AI simulation tool that uses data from billions of Shopify purchases to predict how shoppers will behave in your store before you go live with changes. Think of it as a stress-test for your storefront, powered by real eCommerce purchase data.

On the analytics side, heatmaps are now built in natively — no app required — and bot traffic can be filtered out for cleaner conversion reporting. Inventory history no longer has a 180-day cap, giving you full visibility into stock adjustments for compliance and forecasting. Precise date-and-time controls in analytics let you drill into flash sales and product drops at the minute level, which previously required enterprise-grade tools.

Also worth noting for product-heavy stores: you can now create products with up to 2,048 variants — up from the previous 100 — which opens up significant possibilities for merchants with complex catalogues, such as apparel, footwear, or made-to-order products.

    MARKETING, CHECKOUT, AND RETAIL UPGRADES

Winter 2026 also delivers meaningful upgrades across marketing, checkout, and in-store retail — the three touchpoints where Australian merchants lose the most revenue.

On the marketing front, Shopify Messaging now supports SMS campaigns natively, letting you create, schedule, and track SMS marketing without a separate app subscription. Dynamic product sections in emails automatically display your best-selling products or specific collections. A new calendar view for messaging makes it easier to plan and schedule campaigns across both email and SMS in one place.

In checkout, Shop Pay Installments has expanded to the UK with terms up to 24 months, with further market expansion expected — worth watching for Australian merchants. Apple Pay is now available as a payment method within Shop Pay, and checkout experiences can be customised per market directly in the editor. For any Australian merchants selling internationally, this is a major time-saver.

For retail merchants, the new POS Hub is a standout: it provides the processing power of a computer in a compact hub form factor, with wired connections for card readers, printers, and scanners. Markets for retail now allows different pricing per location — useful for merchants with multiple stores across different cities or states. Subscriptions are also now available on POS, allowing customers to sign up for recurring orders in-store.

Shopify's Winter 2026 Edition is a significant release that touches every part of running an online store — from how customers discover your products through AI tools, to how you test and optimise your storefront, to how you sell in person. The merchants who move quickly on the highest-impact features will gain a meaningful advantage over those who wait.

At beCommerce, we stay across every Shopify release so our clients don't have to.
